Welcome to my first research bulletin. I am excited to be sharing some recent and upcoming work around Language Education for Sustainable Development (LESD), which is a new field I am development that combines language education and Sustainable Development (SD). I am back home in Kobe, Japan after a nice trip back to Canada to see my friends and family after a long couple of years. The image above was taken in the Canadian Rockies and what an absolutely stunning place to refresh after a long couple of pandemic years. I also took the opportunity to work on the 4th chapter of my upcoming book, Language Education for Sustainable Development: A guide for Language educators in the Post-Pandemic World. The book is slow going, but I am hoping to have it out in the next few years, so keep an eye on this space for more. One of my hopes for LESD is that researchers around the world will help me build the field into something useful, practical, and backed by research. The book aims to lay out the foundations, but it is up to educators like you to do the meaningful work in your classrooms! Below you will find links to some of my latest work as well as some upcoming publications that you should check out. I was invited as the plenary speaker at the 30th annual Malaysia English Language Teaching Association (MELTA) conference and the video is my talk. MELTA put on a fantastic online conference this year with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which is an essential part of LESD. In both video, I speak about the SCOPE framework, which is a useful way to start implementing LESD in your classrooms. More on SCOPE can be found in my recent publications (see list below). The work of integrating Sustainable Development is more important than ever in our language classrooms. The latest IPCC report (HERE is the summary for policymakers) makes a very clear, sound, and evidenced picture of our current climate situation and the worrisome case for what happens if we do not act. As language educators, we have agency to not only provide our students the tools to communicate their ideas broadly, but also, provide them with the understandings of challenging global issues like Climate Change. LESD is an integrated approach that attempts to bring together the best of language education and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to do just this. We have agency to make changes in our classroom and offer our students meaningful, interesting, and engaging content, so they can be empowered and resilient in the face of these enormous challenges.
